An honest comparison

Looking for an IDEA Yacht alternative?

First, the respect it's owed: IDEA is one of the longest-established systems in yachting, and large managed superyachts run their compliance on it every day. If you're on this page, something still isn't fitting. I build KODO, so I'm not neutral, but I'll be straight about where each belongs.

The real difference

Office-driven records, or a crew-run day

The two systems answer different leading questions. Compliance-first suites ask: is the record complete for the auditor? KODO asks: who actually runs the boat all day, and what happens to what they know when they leave? Both produce records. They just start from opposite ends of the passerelle.

In practice, the complaint that sends people here is rarely about missing features. It's that the system serves the office, feeding it falls on one or two people aboard, and the rest of the crew's day still lives in WhatsApp, spreadsheets and heads. The record stays compliant while the boat itself forgets.

When IDEA Yacht fits

Stay put if

  • A management company runs your fleet on it and standardisation matters more than what's aboard.
  • You have years of planned-maintenance history structured inside it and no appetite to move.
  • Your leading requirement is compliance depth for class and flag, with a dedicated person to run the system.
When KODO fits

Talk to us if

  • You want the whole crew using one system on their phones, not one officer feeding a database.
  • Crew turnover keeps costing you knowledge: the quirk, the fix, the supplier, the guest's allergy.
  • You want one price with everything in it, and a person who answers instead of a ticket queue.

Straight answers

What people ask us

Is KODO a replacement for IDEA Yacht?

They overlap on maintenance records, certificates and ISM-style documentation, but their centres of gravity differ. IDEA is driven by the office and built around compliance depth. KODO is run by the crew and built around the whole operational day, with the record created as a by-product. Some boats run KODO alongside an incumbent first, then consolidate.

Can we migrate our maintenance history?

Yes. Send whatever exists: spreadsheets, PMS exports, PDFs, binders. Migration and setup are included in the subscription and most of that work is done for you.

What does KODO cost compared to IDEA Yacht?

KODO is €1,000 per vessel per month with every module and unlimited crew accounts included, published publicly. IDEA Yacht pricing is quoted on request; ask them for a like-for-like quote including the modules you need.
